It was good enough for me.
I will always admire Tim Burton's style of direction.
I thank my voice teacher almost 2 years ago for introducing me to 'Not While I'm Around'. The song made me dig more information on the musical by the amazing Stephen Sondheim.
I wanted to hear 'The Ballad of Sweeney Todd', 'Ah Miss', 'Kiss Me' and 'Johanna (Turpin). But I guess putting these songs in the film would lengthen it and will have the possibility to bore people.
I was fine with the squirting blood thing. It was very 'Sleepy Hollow', another Burton masterpiece. I think the bloody scenes are tolerable unless you really hate the sight of blood/fake blood.
I think the main problem for me was I was 'too' prepared for the film. I already knew beforehand what would happen. I was not surprised. But I am still impressed with the film even though few scenes were not added.
Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd- I always thought that he'd be too young to play Todd, but after observing him in the film, he seemed credible to be the lead role. His singing was not perfect, but it complimented with Burton's style of a macabre work, if you know what I mean.
Helena Bonham-Carter as Mrs. Lovett- Of course, HBC did a great job in acting crazily in love with Sweeney. And she also had a softness touch towards Tobias (Ed Sanders)
Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin- I was a bit disappointed when he did not sing Johanna (Mea Culpa-Turpin), but I think his 'admiration' for Johanna (Jayne Wisener) was evident enough during his peeping moments. The 'Pretty Women' bit was adorable.
Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford- I have no problem with him. Because in the Original Broadway Cast, I was indifferent towards Beadle and I am still.
Sacha Baron Cohen as Signor Pirelli- Funny looking. I expected Pirelli to be similar to the Sweeney Todd in Concert Pirelli, Stanford Olsen. Operatic, but Cohen did fine.
Jamie Campbell Bower as Anthony- One of the weakest characters in the film. He had an okay singing voice, but it seemed that he was not in love with Johanna. He was not feeling it. He had a blank face. I have to compare him with Hugh Panaro, Victor Garber and David Gaines (in terms of the singing and acting). The 3 had at least sincerity in their voices. JCB looked the part, I guess.
Jayne Wisener as Johanna- Her singing voice, oh dear. That's all.
Laura Michelle Kelly as Lucy/Old Beggar Woman- the original 'Mary Poppins' in the 'Mary Poppins the Musical' was good. I wanted to hear/see 'Hey hoy sailor boy...' for the emphasizing her madness.
Ed Sanders as Tobias- I think he was perfect as Tobias. He was young and innocent looking, but of course he had that urge to defeat the demon in the end.
